Who Is BET Awards’ “Best New Artist,” Coco Jones?

Coco Jones has recently been recognized with the “Best New Artist” award at the 2023 BET Awards. In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Jones expressed gratitude to her supporters and emphasized the importance of perseverance for Black girls in the industry. With a certified Gold hit and a new EP, Coco Jones continues to establish herself as a talented performer and advocate for change.

Despite her recent mainstream success, the rising R&B artist and actress has been honing her skills for years, starting with her appearance on Disney Channel’s Next Big Thing and starring in the movie Let It Shine

Coco Jones was honored with the “Best New Artist” award at the 2023 BET Awards, a testament to her growing prominence in the music industry. In her acceptance speech, she thanked her fans and acknowledged Black girls’ challenges in achieving recognition and success.  

Jones encouraged others to persevere and continue fighting for what they deserve, emphasizing that great things are within reach. She expressed:

“Thank you so much to culture, who stood beside me” Where she continues, “For all of my black girls, we do have to fight a little harder to get what we deserve. But don’t stop fighting, even when it doesn’t make sense and you’re not sure how you’re gonna get out of those circumstances, keep pushing because we are deserving of great things y’all. And I’m going to continue to give ya’ll my everything.”

Her heartfelt speech resonated with many and further solidified her position as a role model for aspiring artists.

Coco Jones’ Musical Journey

While the former Disney star may seem like a newcomer to some, she has worked hard in the entertainment industry for years. Her journey began with her participation in Disney Channel’s reality series Next Big Thing in 2010, which provided a platform for her to showcase her talent. 

After signing with Hollywood Records, she released her debut single, “Holla At The DJ,” in 2012 and her EP Made Of in 2013. Jones’ career flourished as she embarked on a tour with Mindless Behavior and starred in the Disney Channel movie Let It Shine, where she played the lead role as Roxie and contributed songs to the soundtrack.

Navigating Challenges & Embracing Independence

In 2020, Coco Jones courageously addressed the issue of colorism in the entertainment industry. In a personal YouTube video titled “What Really Happened?” she shared her experiences and revealed the unfair standards and biases she encountered due to her skin color. Despite these challenges, Jones persevered and continued to pursue her passion. 

Following her appearance in the Peacock series Bel-Air in 2021, she released her long-awaited EP titled, What I Didn’t Tell You in 2022 under Def Jam Recordings. Additionally, Jones co-stars alongside media personality TERRELL in the comedic show T And Coco on YouTube, showcasing her versatility as an entertainer.

What I Didn’t Tell You Tour

Coco Jones is constantly evolving and expanding her career. She recently announced her first tour for her EP What I Didn’t Tell You, where she is set to embark on 13 dates with special guest Ebony Riley. 

The tour allows fans to experience Jones’ captivating stage presence and powerful voice. Tickets go on sale Friday, June 30, 2023, at 10 AM. With her growing body of work and a dedicated fanbase, Coco is poised to make an even more significant impact in the entertainment industry.

Coco Jones will join a star-studded lineup, including Teyana Taylor and Muni Long, at the Harlem Festival of Culture, scheduled from July 28, 2023,  to July 30, 2023, on Randall’s Island in New York.
