Agung Mango is undoubtedly one of Melbourne’s most exciting rappers on the rise, and WOKEUPINJAPAN is the original melting-pot of sounds that proves why he’s got such a bright future. YEAH THIS MORNING I HAD WOKEUPINJAPAN!

29. ARNO FARAJI – THINGS CHANGE

Following a break out 2017, Perth Hip-Hop spearhead Arno Faraji took his time in ’18, releasing just the two singles towards the backend of the year – however – it was well worth the wait.

Kicking off the top 20 is Missed Calls – a powerful, visceral single from Blacktown emcee Elijah Yo which tells a confronting story you really just have to hear for yourself.

19. TRAVY P – MISTAKES (ft. I.E.)

Travy P shot to prominence last year off the back of a hit-filled EP and features from peers such as 360 and Manu Crook$, in 2018 however, the charismatic rapper took a step back, dropping just two singles towards the beginning of the year.

Those two singles, Blocbuster and Mistakes (featuring I.E.), were more than enough to tie us over for the year, with the latter proving to be one of the most slept on tunes to come out of Australia recently. Featuring melodic, quotable bars from Travy either side of some luscious I.E. hooks, Mistakes was the ultimate sleeper hit of ’18.

18. THUNDAMENTALS – I MISS YOU

When choppy keys and a catchy hook meet the trademark Thunda charm, it’s gonna be a hit, and I Miss You is a shining example of exactly that.

The pop infused production is warm and sunny, yet it can only play second fiddle to the slick, captivating verses from Tuka and Jeswon which circle the formers buttery hook.

Thundamentals are one of the countries most consistent and beloved bands, and this year they solidified that with yet another class record.

17. TKAY MAIDZA – FLEXIN’ (ft. DUCKWRTH)

TKAY CAME BACK IN 2018 WITH A BANG.

Flexin’ is a whole ass mood that features none other than LA rapper Duckwrth. Once again, Tkay does an amazing job of not only putting Australia on the map, but representing down under with fiery flows, a hip-shaking hook and a magnetic attitude. Tkay Maidza for Prime Minister.

16. CARMOUFLAGE ROSE – WILDFLOWERS

Carmouflage Rose blew up off the back of his 2017 single Late Nights, and before you could say the words ‘one hit wonder’ he came right back with another boundary pushing single that – you guessed it – also went nuts.

Wildflowers is an eccentric crossover of Hip-Hop, Electronic and Afrobeat influences that raised the bar once again for Rose and his right-hand man / super-producer James Angus.

15. KWASI x HFNR – LIES

Kwasi x HFNR put out one of the years most sleek and shiny efforts earlier this year with Lies, a bubbling single that has Kwasi delivering his classic strained vocals in amongst a tropical HFNR beat.

Radiating a light-hearted energy, Francoistunes’ ShowMeLuv was an endearing trappy-go-lucky hit that blended thick, lavish keys with a cartoony aura that felt like the perfect follow up to the Melbourne artists 2017 cut LastDolla.

SHE SAID SHE LOVE ME BUT I DON’T BELIEVE IT

13. VIC AUGUST – WITHDRAWALS

There was a host of Australian talent that was discovered by the masses in 2018, but perhaps there was no splash made as big as Vic Augusts.

An eccentric teen who we’ve been advocating for the past few years, Vic at last broke through to the mainstream this year, signing with WVS and dropping a catalog of hits like it was nothing, and while no release of his was bigger than Bandit (which is creeping up to 1 million streams on Spotify, featuring Figuero Jones) – there was none better than Withdrawals.

The most recent chapter in the ever growing and impressive Vic August story, Withdrawals is the ultimate summer anthem that crosses Hip-Hop, R&B and Pop wires with an icy and trademark Vic steeze.

12. GAMIREZ – LUV

Gamirez was precise and selective with his releases this year, with each single offering something unique to the last, his most recent drop – Luv – took a sharp turn from the alt-trap sound he toyed with on Grinding, instead preferring a bouncy, club-hit vibe.

Punchy and mature, Gamirez’s Luv is our 12th best song for 2018.

11. HAWI x MARS – FIFA

At a base level, FIFA is basically a bunch of 6k teens having fun. Beyond that, it’s an intricate, playful cut that is one of the years biggest surprise packages.

Perth emcee’s Hawi73 and Mars deliver glossy, charismatic verses either side of a choppy, lawn-mower-flow hook, one that catches you off guard in the best way possible.

Hip-Hop in Australia has an immensely bright future, headed by artists such as Hawi and Mars.

10. IMBI THE GIRL – SWELL

Swell is the moving, emotive single from Sydney songwriter Imbi The Girl, with the slick, sparse production coming from Melbourne mainstay Hamley.

Swell is the ultimate snapshot of Imbi’s immense skill set, as Imbi ducks-and-weaves throughout their verses with pace and precision, either side of their jaunting, dizzying hook.

EMOTIONS WILL SWELL, EMOTIONS WILL TIDE.

9. FIGUERO JONES – GETONUP!

Figuero could have had a number of records in this spot, including Fortunes, Switch (prod. by rising 6k wizard ErikiBeatz) and Records, however, there were two standouts from his busy 2018.

Those two were No Sofa’s – featuring Black Napoleon – and GETONUP!.

GETONUP! edged out the heavy-hitter that was No Sofa’s with its minimal production giving Figuero the stage to flex his fiery falsetto’s and unsettling raps. The Perth rapper/producer/singer built up one of the countries most impressive 2018 catalogs, which in turn earned him spot number 9 on our list.

8. CHILLINIT – WISH YOU WELL PT.2 (It’s A Vibe)

Speaking of artists who had a big year, ChillinIt had the biggest of them all, no debate.

The Sydney lyricist built on his cult of fans in 2018 with an unmatched work-rate, dropping his debut LP Women Weed & Wordplay to a monumental reception. While any song off the album could have made this list, it was his summer party jam Wish You Well Pt.2 (It’s A Vibe) which topped the lot.

Banging production, nimble flows and an organic berth, Wish You Well Pt.2 is an undeniable Aussie anthem.

7. COOPER – WOULDN’T CHANGE

Cooper put his own humble twist on the classic sound of Australian Hip-Hop’s past and most prominent sound with his ZEN EP this year, and while tracks such as Taking You With Me and Counting The Days could have easily made this list, it was his debut single Wouldn’t Change which stuck with us most.

Sunny piano chops and some upbeat, mood-lifting drums play the backdrop to Cooper’s catchy, reminiscent debut, in what is an original and brilliantly done take on a quaint Australian sound.

6. ANFA ROSE – TANGIER

Moroccan-Australian songwriter Anfa Rose kicked off his 2018 She Been Waiting II EP with a jittery, jubilant anthem – Tangier.

The R&B-meets-trap cut has Anfa stepping from strong melodies to rugged raps over a stunning guitar-plucking loop, healthy kicks and snappy snares for what is one of the years dopest songs.

5. THE KID LAROI – BLESSINGS

At just 14-years-old, The Kid Laroi wrote one of the years best and biggest Hip-Hop hits, with Blessings.

The young Sydney creative brings in innovative, bright vibe to the modern trap sound we’ve heard lots of in 2018, with shimmering production working in tandem with his witty bars and booming vocals.

The Kid Laroi’s Blessings is exactly that to a Hip-Hop landscape that’s ready to explode in Australia.

4. KAIIT – OG LUV KUSH PT.2

Kaiit garnered the attention from the likes of Erykah Badu and Jill Scott this year, and for very very good reason.

Her globally adored single OG Luv Kush pt.2 blended breezy keys and subtle yet snappy drums with a flawless vocal performance, for what was a sweet and sultry ear worm that positions Kaiit as one of the countries brightest new stars.

3. KWAME – WOW

Kwame strolled on in to 2018, dropped one of the years most colourful trap-bangers, and then proceeded to take over for the remaining 10-months.

WOW is the self-produced happy-banger that sky-rocketed Kwame’s already promising career, with his energetic raps and the catchy, piercing hook placing the young Sydney artist where he deserves to be.

2. TRIPLE ONE – SHOWOFF

Triple One have launched themselves onto international radars over the last 24 months, following the release of an eclectic collection of tunes that stumble across the lines of Hip-Hop, Indie and just about everything else in-between.

Taking the Triple One cake this year for us – just ahead of Tarlo – was their brazen and buoyant anthem Showoff. The track blends heavy, haunting production with a spirited hook that lands amongst the brash and energetic verses of members Marty Bugatti and Obi Ill.

Showoff is one of the years grandest hits from one of the countries most exciting and groundbreaking acts – and it comes alongside a brilliant music video featuring the familiar likes of ChillinIt and Huskii.

1. MANU CROOK$ – FUEGO (ft. ANFA ROSE)

The best song to come from Australian shores in 2018 was Fuego, by way of established Sydney stars Manu Crooks and Anfa Rose.

Produced by DOPAM!NE – and making for a star-studded trio – Fuego is a sleek and sultry latin-flavoured hit that pairs Manu’s cool, collected style with a resounding Anfa hook.

Lavish and lush, the glossy single found success from Australia and beyond, garnering in excess of 7 million streams on Spotify to date.

Manu Crooks continue to build with every passing year, and Fuego is ultimately his most complete work to date – and our #1 song of the year.
