Rihanna, Angela Bassett, Brian Tyree Henry & More Score This Year’s BIPOC Academy Award Nominations

The 95th annual Academy Awards nominations were announced at 8:30 am on Jan. 24 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Among the list of names called were also some of the most iconic BIPOC stars.

The 95th annual Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, have officially revealed this year’s nominations. SOHH, here are the BIPOC actors, actresses, writers, musicians, and more nominated for an Oscar.

• This marks Angela’s second Oscar nomination after her role as Tina Turner in 1993’s What’s Love Got to Do With It and the first Oscar nomination for an actor’s performance in a Marvel movie. 

Best Animated Feature Film

Guillermo Del Toro’s “Pinnochio”

Guillermo del Toro, Mark Gustafson, Gary Ungar and Alex Bulkley

• This marks Guillermo Del Toro’s seventh Oscar nomination. The Mexican filmmaker won the “Best Picture” and “Best Director” Oscars for his 2017 fantasy romance film The Shape of Water.

• Ruth made history as the first African American to take home the Academy Award for “Best Costume Design” for her work on the first movie, Black Panther.
