Predicting Australia’s Next Crop Of Hip-Hop Heavyweights

Predicting Australia’s Next Crop Of Hip-Hop Heavyweights

Joining the likes of ChillinIt, Carmouflage Rose, Kwame, Huskii, Vic August, Figuero Jones and co from 2018 (and Manu Crooks, Travy P, Anfa Rose + more from previous years) – this year we expect a brand new wave of emerging talent to display a new level to their artistry, blowing up in their city and beyond.

Gamirez

Gamirez is the 6k-come-BNE rapper who’s set to take his game to a whole other level in 2k19, believe that you’ll see this name on Festival line-ups and blogs around the country come the years end.

Gratis Minds

East coast crew Gratis Minds are an underground favourite, however, their charismatic charm, shimmering production and intricate songwriting is poised to take them far beyond Australia’s shores over the next 12 months.

Jessica Jade

South west Sydney’s own R&B queen Jessica Jade has long had the potential to take over the airwaves with her slick fusion of R&B and Hip-Hop elements, and with a consistent release plan in ’19, expect the young songwriter to now do exactly that.

T$oko

T$oko – much like the aforementioned Jessica Jade – has long been ready to blow up; off the back of his bars and brevity with pen in hand. This year, at last, it seems the stars will align as we finally get more T$oko music than we’ve ever previously had.

Brandon Støne

Brandon Støne has been on our radar for years now, and with his consistent drops has come a growing maturity on wax, with the young burn city rapper displaying an ability to deliver everything from emotional rap lullabies to abrasive trap anthems without once veering from what makes him a unique, one-of-one artist.

Johniepee

Charismatic, charming and with talent oozing out his pores, Perth’s own Johniepee has been meticulous in his approach since bursting on to the scene two years ago, and that approach is switching gears in 2019, with a new project ready to drop and make the Johniepee name an instantly recognisable one across the country.

Sophiya

Sophiya is the fierce Melbourne emcee who showed nothing but promise and prowess on her self-produced debut effort White Ivory, and with a base like that to launch off, we expect her to become a household name littering line-ups and live shows across the country this year.

Juñor

Despite having only two official releases next to his name over the last couple years, northside Melbourne creative Juñor has been continuously developing and steadily building towards having a monumental, career-launching calendar year musically, which we believe is now upon us.

Z. Lewis

Label-mate and collaborator to Juñor is Z. Lewis, a wizard with the pen who we’ve covered a number of times, and we’re certain we’ll only cover his crafty lyricism and choppy, cut-throat flows more in the new year.

Mike Wang

Mike Wang is yet another burn city emcee who’s set to blow the f*ck up any minute now with his glossy, expressive lyrics and punchy songwriting making for a perfect storm that the mainstream will catch on to soon enough. Expect Mike Wang to continue to kill it in 2k19, and expect those numbers to run up in a big way. Next up.

Phillabu$trr

Phillabu$trr took time to hone his craft, work on mind-boggling collaborations and build himself a meaningful base to launch off last year, and based on the many snippets and peaks we get of his new work across his social medias, the alternative Sydney artist is poised for a year as big as any.

Black Napoleon

Black Napoleon had a huge year last year, dropping an EP as well as delivering some of the years most hyped collabs in the form of No Sofa’s and Switch alongside Figuero Jones.  However, this year you can expect Black Nappy to step up to the plate and deliver hits on hits that will place himself and his K9 crew on the map as one of the countries most talented and exciting new collectives.

ZEKIEL

With an impressive debut under his belt, ZEKIEL will bless us further in ’19 with his crooning, dizzying delivery and classy songwriting, and we are so ready for it. We predict ZEKIEL to infiltrate mainstream radio’s airwaves this year. No doubt.

Hawi & MARS

Two perth teens who came through with a couple of 2018’s catchiest and most original hits – with FIFA and Mi Goreng – Hawi and MARS are expected to continue their hot streak this year, releasing more imaginative and original hits to soundtrack the youth of Australia.
