A Call to Action Through Sound
Manchester-based artist Emily Mercer has returned with her latest single, ‘Flatlining’, a track that masterfully balances lush, comforting instrumentation with a propulsive, introspective core. The song serves as an evocative exploration of the frustration inherent in feeling stuck—both in life and within one’s own behavioral patterns—and the quiet, determined resolve required to break free.
Blending elements of indie, folk, alternative pop, and jazz-tinged sensibilities, the track was produced by Rhys Jiang. It stands out for its ability to contrast upbeat musicality with a deeply personal, lyrical narrative. Mercer describes the creative impetus behind the song as a reaction to stagnation: “Flatlining was born out of frustration at feeling stagnant and stuck in life, going round in circles, getting in my own way and knowing I can be better than I allow myself to be. It’s about feeling trapped by your own mind, falling into the same patterns over and over—but ultimately it’s a call to action.”
A Human Counterpoint to Automation
Alongside the single, Mercer has unveiled an accompanying lyric video created in collaboration with Ned Foster. The project emphasizes a tactile, human approach to visual storytelling, serving as a deliberate rebellion against the rise of AI-generated content. Filmed at a kitchen table with a smartphone and a modest budget, the stop-motion video features hand-drawn frames that mirror the restless energy of the music.
“In a way, making something this slow and painstaking feels like our rebellion against AI art,” Mercer notes. This commitment to the art of the process highlights her broader creative philosophy, which often explores themes of mental health, self-sabotage, and what she calls “a messy humanity.”
Originally hailing from the Suffolk coast, Mercer has spent years refining a sound that marries classic piano-driven songwriting with lo-fi textures and rich arrangements. With ‘Flatlining’, she successfully transforms the universal tension between inertia and change into a vibrant, self-aware anthem that encourages listeners to fight against their own apathy.
