Aksak Maboul: Figures

Aksak Maboul: Figures

Belgium’s Aksak Maboul didn’t title their 1977 debut album Onze Danses Pour Combattre la Migraine (“Eleven Dances for Fighting Migraines”) for nothing. Figures (Crammed) is the trio’s first album of new material in decades, and it pushes Maboul’s idiosyncratic brand of arty chamber-rock in a classy new direction. Alternating long and short tracks, they ultimately deliver a full meal of sophisticated and witty European prog and Eno-esque minimalism, with some particularly great moments (e.g., “Formerly Known as Défilé”) reminiscent of ‘60 Zappa at his “prettiest.”
