Video Premiere: Half Hour Late “Gettin’ By”

San Deigo sea-side bred ensemble Half Hour Late have been dishing out sunkissed sonic waves of funk, R&B, rock and blues since the early ’20s. The ensemble, who self-proclaimed themselves as “your girlfriend’s favorite band,” came up in a shed in Ocean Beach and have since delighted with their relaxed style and free-flowing sound, which earned them a nomination for Best Pop Album of 2022 at the San Diego Music Awards.

Today, we premiere Half Hour Late’s new video for “Gettin’ By,” a testament to their connection, creativity and musicianship that is sure the get fans kicking up dust. The video was filmed around Southern California’s remote deserts, including Slab City, which some consider as the “last free place in America.” The clip is filmed in the style of a mini-movie with a warning before the video begins, credits which include Zack Stillwater, Riley Dring, David Pozay, Kasey Dring and special guest Rick “The Lips” Harris.

The film–directed by Daniel M. Dyer–swiftly puts the pedal to the metal as a van expedition across the begrimed yet liberated landscape begins, and the protagonist is picked up at a gas station with only a guitar in hand. As catchy rhythms cascade throughout the track, the respective members of the group are picked up, and their shared joy accumulates in a snowball effect. They play as they go, stopping at skate parks and one-off parties before, just as quickly as the leading man was picked up, he’s left, just the same as he was – sans his guitar.

“On the second night after another full day of filming, our production’s quiet expedition to find a tranquil camping spot quickly turned into a lesson in hard labor,” said Dring. “Equipped with nothing but one shovel and sheer will, our three vans relied on us to taste sweet pavement again. Those 4 hours taught us what it really takes to get by.”

Notably, Half Hour Late will perform at San Diego’s massive OB St. Paddy’s Day festivities on March 17, 2023.
