Today, hot on the heels of the announcement of their appearance at the Faherty’s Surfrider’s initiative at the Brooklyn Bowl on March 1, indie alt-rock outfit Moon Taxi have released a new single titled “Classics.” The track marks the first of their upcoming album, which marks their sixth and is set to release in 2023.

“Classics” is equal parts nostalgic and experimental; the droning yet crisp lyrics of Moon Taxi’s vocalist and guitarist Trevor Terndrup evoke images of garage chill sessions and warm summer sunsets while pulling out the excitement of what could come later that night.

“‘Classics’ taps into the alchemy of listening to music as a teenager. It’s such a crazy time of self-discovery and identity formation,” shared Terndrup in a press release.

“Music got us through it all and helped us get to the other side.” Lead guitarist Spencer Thomson adds, “This is our ode to the songs that comfort us and usher in waves of nostalgia. The music and lyrics recall scenes of 90’s youth bliss, driving around aimlessly listening to burned CDs.”

The track and the project as a whole see Moon Taxi team up with producer Brennan Aerts who, judging from the single, helped bring their vision to life. Since their last full project and the global pandemic, the band has utilized their time focusing on themselves and their families and were inspired to add their newfound perspectives on life to their sound.

Keyboardist Wes Bailey shared in a press release, “This album feels more authentically our own than anything we’ve done in years.”

Moon Taxi will celebrate at the aforementioned Sun Sessions event at Brooklyn Bowl, welcoming support from indie-electronic duo Forester, which will be in support of the Surfider Foundation, a longtime partner of Faherty and a nonprofit grassroots organization dedicated to the protection and preservation of our ocean, waves, and beaches.

Tickets are on sale now and available here.
