London Records Announces Definitive Happy Mondays Reissue

London Records has officially announced a major, definitive reissue program for the Happy Mondays‘ landmark 1990 album, Pills ’n’ Thrills and Bellyaches. Widely considered the defining record of the late 80s and early 90s club and indie crossover era, this new collection features audio remastered directly from the original Factory Records master tapes.

A Comprehensive Collection

The reissue, scheduled for release on August 21st, will be available across multiple formats, catering to both casual listeners and dedicated collectors. The 5LP Super Deluxe Edition is the centerpiece of the announcement, featuring the original album alongside the legendary Hallelujah and Madchester Rave On EPs. It also includes the Baby Baby Big Head Bootleg Album, recorded live at Elland Road in 1991, and a 60-page hardback book with liner notes by author and journalist James Brown.

The book provides deep insight into the album’s creation, featuring an essay by original Central Station Design members Pat Carroll and Karen Jackson—now known as Sublime Limbo—alongside Samuel Carroll. The essay, titled ‘Postcards from the Edge: The Art and Anarchy of Pills ’n’ Thrills and Bellyaches’, reveals that Shaun Ryder originally considered the title Kinky Album for the record.

Legacy of an Era

Pills ’n’ Thrills and Bellyaches captured the chaotic, euphoric spirit of the ‘Madchester’ movement, blending indie rock with acid house rhythms and funk. With era-defining singles like “Step On,” “Kinky Afro,” and “Loose Fit,” the album became a cultural touchstone. Its success propelled the band into the mainstream, gracing the covers of the NME and appearing on Top Of The Pops.

The recording process, which took place at Eden Studios in London and Capitol Studios in Los Angeles with producers Steve Osborne and Paul Oakenfold, resulted in a sound that continues to influence modern indie and electronic artists today. The iconic artwork, featuring a collage of American sweet wrappers and British snack packaging, remains as visually striking as the music itself.

Following the band’s various reformations and their recent 35th-anniversary tour, this reissue serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Happy Mondays. Fans can pre-order the various editions, including the 4CD, 2CD, and multiple vinyl variants, starting now.
