In Conversation: The High-Energy World of FAT CONCUBINE

South-East London based FAT CONCUBINE has experienced a whirlwind start to 2026. Following a standout performance at New York’s New Colossus festival in March, the duo—comprising Suzanne and Hannya—has found themselves at the center of a growing international buzz. Their unique sound, described as a “high-end, danceable riot,” has captured the attention of audiences and industry figures alike, including American fashion designer Rick Owens.

The duo’s origin story is as unconventional as their music. “We played a more or less spontaneous set with a friend on guitar… dressed like drag queens on acid and blew up the PA at London’s most glorious dive bar, The Old Dispensary,” they recall. When a photographer asked for the band’s name after the set, Hannya simply declared, “FAT CONCUBINE.” The name stuck, and the project was born.

When asked to distill their essence into five words, the pair offers a simple, evocative mantra: “Rave for the mosh pit.”

Building on the momentum of their debut EP, EMPIRE, the band continues to explore themes of power and liberation. “Every track on EMPIRE pounds through power struggles and inner battles, capturing that tension between submission, resistance, and letting go,” they explain. “It’s the sound of playing the fiddle while Rome burns.”

Their latest single, ‘ROOOAAAR’, serves as a testament to their high-energy aesthetic. The track is inspired by the chaotic, electric atmosphere of a night out that reaches a fever pitch. “It’s about those nights which escalate into chaos and everyone is riding and embracing it,” the band notes. “There’s this one person who crosses the border and everyone who witnesses it goes: ‘Yes. That’s it.’ It clicks.”

The band’s experience at New Colossus was transformative. For Suzanne, playing in New York felt like “rediscovering one’s own childhood… just without the mess.” The festival also paved the way for a significant career milestone: a monthly residency at Alphaville in Brooklyn, beginning October 2, 2026. This opportunity arose after Robert Prichard of Radio Free Brooklyn, an early supporter of the band, connected them with the venue.

As for what keeps the duo grounded amidst their rising profile? Their answers remain as enigmatic as their stage presence: “A frozen goat head. The suitcase from Pulp Fiction. And a love letter.”
