Lacy’s Origins

Lacy was born in Compton, California, mostly raised by his mother, as his father only came around for special occasions and eventually passed when Steve was 10. He grew up very sheltered by his mother, who wanted to shield her family from the environment in Compton at the time.

The singer-songwriter garnered interest in playing guitar at the age of 7 because of the game Guitar Hero but soon progressed to playing on an actual guitar, and that’s where the story starts.

Lacy’s Own Work

Lacy started producing by making beats on his iPhone, which he has now become known for doing continuously throughout his career, most notably on the song PRIDE off Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN album, on J Cole’s album “4 Your Eyez Only” and Tyler the Creator’s “Flower Boy.” But in his own musical landscape, he has found himself twice Grammy-nominated for his work and performance on the album “Ego Death” with his group “The Internet” in the Best Urban Contemporary category and in his 2019 solo project “Apollo XXI” in the same category.

Lacy’s Inspirations And The Future

Steve Lacy cites his biggest inspirations in music as Thundercat, Erykah Badu, Pharell, and Kanye West, all people who he says “are the reason I do, and continue what I do, the way I do.” Most recently Steve was pictured at the Donda creation sessions at Mercedes Benz Stadium, leading fans of both artists to assume he was on the album for vocals, guitar, or production.  But the dream didn’t come true as Lacy wasn’t listed on the album credits.  But with a new album on the horizon for Steve, maybe they’ll be a YE feature in the cards.

Catch Lacy at his upcoming LA show on April 20th.
