‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ Co-Stars Tori Spelling and Shannen Doherty Explain How Their Friendship Ended

While Brenda Walsh and Donna Martin were basically inseparable on Beverly Hills, 90210, Shannen Doherty and Tori Spelling’s IRL friendship was the opposite. Spelling appeared on an episode of Doherty’s Let’s Be Clear podcast, recalling their time on the popular teen drama and dug into their friendship, which also included their inevitable falling out. Via People, Doherty admitted on the podcast that “one minute, we were friends, and then one minute we weren’t.”

Spelling also admitted to being a “swayer,” to which Doherty agreed as part of their “downfall.” “You were always easily swayed,” Doherty shared. “And it was very frustrating for me because I always used to tell you like, ‘Yeah, Tor, have an opinion.’ Like, you’re smart, you’re funny, you’re talented. I loved you, and I respected you, and I wanted you to believe in yourself as much as I believed in you.”

While trying to figure out what exactly brought their close friendship to an end, Doherty confessed she thinks it also falls on Spelling’s boyfriend at the time, who was “abusive” and “an addict.” The Charmed alum recalled a trip to Mexico she and her co-star took with their boyfriends before their friendship turned upside down as they “started drifting apart” after the trip. Doherty couldn’t stand seeing Spelling in that kind of relationship.

‘I can’t recall the exact riff, but I’m thinking all of those things sort of collided at one time,” Doherty said. “And maybe it was just so much pressure from other people that, you know, the friendship just dissipated, and then you gravitated toward others.” It also didn’t help that Spelling was “easily swayed” by cast members as she admitted, whether it was about a magazine cover or Christmas gifts for the crew.

Even though Shannen Doherty and Tori Spelling had a rough relationship back then, they seem to be doing well now. They occasionally look back at their time together on 90210 on social media by sharing throwback photos or reunite at conventions such as ’90s Con, where Doherty was given a standing ovation last year. It’s unfortunate that they had a falling out, but at least they are friends once again, which is really all that matters. They may not be as close as they once were, but even the strongest friendships sometimes drift apart over the years.
