Massive Champion is the highly anticipated new album from Bristol’s Getdown Services, set for release on 14th August via Breakfast Records. Serving as the follow-up to their acclaimed debut Crisps, the record arrives alongside the release of their latest earworm, ‘I Can’t Die Like That’, and the announcement of the duo’s most extensive UK headline tour to date, which includes a performance at the Roundhouse on 8th December.
‘I Can’t Die Like That’ captures the quintessential sound of Getdown Services, blending simmering, infectious hooks with the band’s signature perceptive and off-the-wall lyricism. Reflecting on the track, the band shared: “‘I Can’t Die Like That’ is about the feeling of simple things becoming complicated. We thought it was interesting to think about the ways in which something as straightforward as dying can be difficult. It’s also about clinging on to feelings that comfort you but aren’t necessarily healthy.” Much like the rest of Massive Champion, the song finds catharsis in contradiction, balancing heavy subject matter with candour and humour.
The duo, known for their surrealist approach, masterfully plunder elements of synth, post-punk, and art pop to craft their witty, wry compositions. According to the official press release, Massive Champion is “an odyssey of anarchic joy, seditious wit and boundless energy.” The album sees Josh Law and Ben Sadler pushing deeper into the singular world they have been building for years, while simultaneously exploring new emotional and lyrical territory.
Written during the gaps between relentless touring, the album stands as their boldest statement yet—an ode to childhood, British cultural detritus, and the absurd poetry of everyday life. As the band notes, the project is “about self-pity and realising that maybe all of the healing your inner child stuff you hear about isn’t actually total bollocks. Musically and lyrically I think it’s about us trying to clean up our act a bit.”
The tracklist for Massive Champion includes: Poor Bannister, I Can’t Die Like That, Probiotic, Cha Cha Slide, The Radiator, The Definitive Map, A Crazy Story, What’s On Your Mind?, Stop Living, No One Likes Me, Check The Definition, Lentils, and 600 Dance Lessons.
Massive Champion will be available on 12″ Vinyl (Transparent Lime and Dinked Edition) and a 4-panel gatefold CD. General tickets for their upcoming 2026 tour go on sale Friday, 22nd May.
