Singer-songwriter and soul legend Bettye LaVette has shared the latest single off her forthcoming eponymous album, dubbed LaVette! The new track has been titled “Hard To Be A Human” and captures the artist breathing new life into the borrowed composition.
The new single presents LaVette embracing a rhythm infused with elements of Afrobeat and her signature soul sound. “I LOVE this tune,” offered the artist via a press release, commenting on her new number with Steve Jordan (drums), Pino Palladino (bass), Leon Pendarvis (keyboard), Larry Campbell (guitar) and Chris Bruce (guitar).
“I liked it as soon as I heard it, especially the lines ‘I was walkin’ in the garden, goin’ by the plan, dreamin’ about my baby, apple in my hand. And then Steve and the guys put together such a great arrangement. My good friend James Carter played the most incredible sax solo with the actual horn that once belonged to my deceased, dear friend of many years, Beans Bowles. You can’t listen to it without at least trying to salsa. Did I mention that I LOVE this tune,” she concluded.
“Hard To Be A Human” arrives after the artist released her first single, “Plan B,” off her forthcoming LP, which also includes contributions from special guests such as John Mayer, Jon Batiste, Anthony Hamilton, Steve Winwood, Ray Parker Jr., Rev. Charles Hodges, James Carter and Pedito Martinez.
LaVette is set to perform in late June through mid-July with stops in Seattle, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. and more. Learn more and find tickets to LaVette’s upcoming performances here.
