Last night, the Tedeschi Trucks Band kicked off their third annual Sun, Sand and Soul Weekend on the Gulf Coast of Florida in Miramar Beach. The festival, which comes as the group continues to support their latest studio project, Future Soul, featured a setlist that highlighted both their recent creative evolution and a poignant tribute to a legendary musician.
As a special feature of the evening, the ensemble concluded their performance with a cover of Traffic’s iconic track, “Feelin’ Alright?” The delivery served as a heartfelt nod to Dave Mason, the song’s key contributor, who passed away on Sunday, April 19.
The festival frame opened with a three-piece suite from Future Soul, featuring “Crazy Cryin’,” “I Got You,” and “Who Am I,” before the band transitioned into a cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Loving Cup.” The set continued with the original “Do I Look Worried,” followed by a series of classic covers, including Ann Cole’s “Got My Mojo Working (But It Just Won’t Work on You)” and a selection of Derek and the Dominos material, such as “Bell Bottom Blues” and “Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?”
The performance maintained its momentum with title tracks “Let Me Get By” and “High & Mighty,” followed by Frank Zappa’s “Willie the Pimp” and a two-part Sly & the Family Stone tribute consisting of “You Can Make It If You Try” and “Everyday People.” The group returned to their latest LP with “Soul Sweet Song” and Susan Tedeschi’s “Just Won’t Burn,” before closing the main frame with “I Want More” and a segue into Santana’s “Soul Sacrifice.”
The encore provided the emotional centerpiece of the night. The group honored the late Dave Mason by performing his beloved Traffic contribution, “Feelin’ Alright?” Notably, the Tedeschi Trucks Band first debuted the track on September 11, 2015, during the LOCKN’ Festival, with Mason himself on vocals. Since that initial performance, the song has remained a rarity for the group, having been covered only five times over the past 11 years.
Tedeschi Trucks Band will take a brief hiatus before returning to the Sun, Sand and Soul Weekend stage this Saturday.
