Watch Missy Elliott’s Epic VMA Video Vanguard Performance

Missy Elliott finally got her flowers.

The rap icon received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at Monday’s MTV Video Music Awards and took it back with a retrospective of hits spanning her two-decade-plus career. The Grammy-winning trailblazer kicked off the seven-minute medley with “Throw It Back” off her new EP Iconology.

She then brought back the black garbage bag for “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” followed by “Get Ur Freak On.” She flipped it and reversed it while performing “Work It” featuring a surprise appearance from Alyson Stoner, who danced as a child in the original 2002 music video.

Missy then transformed into a scarecrow in a cornfield while recreating her iconic “Pass That Dutch” video, closing with the electrifying “Lose Control.”

Justin Timberlake, Janet Jackson, and Ciara all praised Missy in video tributes, while Cardi B presented her with the award on stage. “Everybody has copied from Missy Elliott, even me!” said the “Bodak Yellow” rapper.

A humbled Missy took the stage to thank her Supa Friends including Timbaland and the late Aaliyah. “This Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award means so much to me,” she said. “I have worked diligently for over two decades and I never thought I would be up here receiving this award. It means so much to me.”
