The World Remembers George Floyd’s Life
Over the past few hours, people have relied on the power of Twitter to speak out. Emotional posts centered on Floyd being much more than a victim but also a family man who had his life forcefully taken away.
“May 25. A day to remember George Floyd and the sacrifice he made a year ago. The long history of racial inequity, oppression, and injustice was brought to light once again because of his death. Conversations around these issues have evolved, but there’s still progress to be made.”

George Floyd became a symbol, but he was also a man. He had hopes, dreams, and people who loved him.
It was his life that mattered, not just his death.
Take a moment today to reflect and to pray for his family. pic.twitter.com/uPL2yZnyKx

George Floyd was murdered by Minneapolis police a year ago today. Far too little has changed in the interim. Until cops are selected and trained very differently, this tragic situation is bound to persist. Murders like Floyd’s are bound to recur. Police reform is mandatory.

He was not just a victim.
His death was not just a catalyst for activism and protests.#GeorgeFloyd was a man.
A father.
A brother.
A friend.
His life mattered.
Sending love & light to his family and loved ones today. pic.twitter.com/LkKwPAyQRx— Sherrilyn Ifill (@Sifill_LDF) May 25, 2021
Tomorrow marks one year since George Floyd was murdered, and I'm thinking about his daughter, Gianna, who will be marking one year without her daddy.
George Floyd had a rich and loving life. And it wasn't just taken from him, it was taken from all who loved him.

One year ago George Floyd was murdered by a policeman in the United States. Today we remember all those who died in custody – and their families & friends. How long should we allow racism to kill our neighbours & divide our communities? Let’s act to make #BlackLivesMatter

A year ago George Floyd was murdered by a police officer.
Had it not been filmed, & were it not for the anti-racist protests it ignited, that officer could still be patrolling the streets.
Justice isn't handed to us. It must be demanded. And we demand it until #BlackLivesMatter

May 25th. One year since the murder of #GeorgeFloyd and still no National Police Reform Law.

George Floyd’s Killer Charged Again
The man responsible for killing Floyd – Derek Chauvin – was recently charged for violating civil rights by a federal grand jury, alongside three of his fellow Minneapolis PD officers who have also lost their jobs. The specifics of the charge essentially acknowledge all four men deprived Floyd of his constitutional right “not to be deprived of liberty without due process of law.”
The indictment says the defendants “saw George Floyd lying on the ground in clear need of medical care, and willfully failed to aid Floyd, thereby acting with deliberate indifference to a substantial risk of harm to Floyd. This offense resulted in bodily injury to, and the death of, George Floyd.” (TMZ)
Timbaland Imagines George Floyd Watching Derek Chauvin
In early April 2021, Grammy-winning rapper Timbaland drew attention to the Floyd trial by sharing a painting of the late Floyd standing up behind Chauvin on Instagram. The illustration reflects the former cop’s punishment and being found guilty in his death.
“Imagine that!!!!! Art by @huliodraws”
Hip-Hop Reacts To The Verdict
Last month, the hip-hop community spoke out after an emotional verdict went down aiming to keep ex-cop Derek Chauvin behind bars for decades. Everyone from Meek Mill and Young M.A to “Power” creator Courtney Kemp came forward to weigh-in on George Floyd’s family and supporters finally receiving justice.
“You have to literally get killed on camera to get a chance at justice as a black man in America …..I salute you black king rest in power!!”
