Jay-Z will take the stage for a rare performance in Paris to promote Louis Vuitton’s Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol art exhibit. Jay has been a fan, referencing Basquiat’s art in his lyrics many times over the years.
Jay-Z, who rarely takes the stage, will perform in Paris for Louis Vuitton’s new Basquiat x Warhol art exhibit. Basquiat was a street artist who specialized in graffiti and neo-expressionism and Warhol was a painter and a leading figure in the pop art movement.
The two successful artists frequently worked together in the 1980s.
In a tweet by the rap billionaire’s company Roc Nation, the announcement’s caption was posted in French. In translation, it said Jay-Z will be performing at the Louis Vuitton Foundation’s auditorium in Paris on April 14.
Louis Vuitton’s “Basquiat x Warhol: Painting Our Hands”
Louis Vuitton will showcase their art exhibit of work from the late artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol, called the “Basquiat x Warhol: Painting Our Hands” exhibit. The upcoming performance is rare for Jay-Z, however, the rapper-turned-mogul recently performed DJ Khaled’s “GOD DID” at the 2023 Grammys on Feb. 5.
Jay-Z is a fan of Basquiat’s work and owns one of his classic paintings called “Mecca.” The “Empire State Of Mind ” rapper has also mentioned Basquiat in his lyrics.
In his 2013 song, “Picasso Baby,” Jay-Z rapped,
“Yellow Basquiat in my kitchen corner/Go ‘head lean on that sh*t Blue, you own it.”
The event will be sponsored by luxury jewelry retailer Tiffany & Co., which is also business partners with Jay and his wife Beyoncé.
In 2021, an old friend of Basquiat’s, Alexis Adler, said Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s Tiffany & Co. campaign picture with one of Basquiat’s art pieces “horrified her ” because she believed the couple used the picture for monetary reasons rather than admiring the art.
