Christopher Schurr, the white cop who fatally shot Patrick Lyoya during a traffic stop has been officially terminated. His termination was in effect on Friday, June 11, of last week. 

Mark Washington, Grand Rapids City Manager, stated he had acted on a recommendation from the police chief as well as the city’s Labor Relations Office to remove Schurr from the force. 

“I accepted that recommendation and scheduled a required discharge hearing,” Washington said in a statement. “I have been informed by Mr. Schurr’s representatives that he is waiving his right to the hearing and, therefore, I have decided to terminate Mr. Schurr’s employment with the Grand Rapids Police Department effective June 10, 2022.”

Washington was unable to give any further comments due “to the ongoing criminal matter and the potential for civil litigation.”

Michigan police officer Christopher Shurr is officially facing second-degree murder charges for executing Patrick Lyoya. On Thursday, June 9,  Kent County’s prosecuting attorney, Christopher Becker, officially charged Officer Christopher Schurr with second-degree murder.

Ven Johnson, the lawyer for the Lyoya family, said, “What this family hopes for is that more sooner than later — like now, today — those police officers understand that what they got away with in the past they can’t get away with anymore.”
