Brian Flores Sues NFL, Broncos, and Giants For Racial Bias

Flores filed the suit in the Southern District of New York on Tuesday. The suit alleges that the Giants interviewed Flores simply to satisfy the NFL’s Rooney Rule mandate requiring that teams interview minority candidates.

In the suit, Flores accuses Dolphins owner Stephen Ross of offering him $100,000 for every loss in an effort to tank the No. 1 draft pick during the 2019 NFL season. He also included text messages he alleges are from New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, demonstrating that the Giants conducted an interview with Flores while knowing that they intended to hire Brian Daboll as head coach.

Flores spoke to a roundtable of CBS Mornings hosts that included former NFL player Nate Burleson.

Flores thanked everyone who had reached out to him via text, phone, and email to offer him support, saying that it had been a “tough” few days.

“It was a range of emotions. Humiliation, disbelief, anger,” Flores said when asked to describe how he felt when he went through a “sham” interview with the Giants. “I’ve worked so hard to get to where I am in football, to become a head coach. For 18 years in this league and to go on what felt like what was a sham interview, I was hurt.”

The emails contained derogatory and misogynistic sentiments, including criticism of women referees and racist remarks about the head of the NFL Players Association, DeMaurice Smith.
