‘!’ is the latest album from platinum-selling rapper/songwriter Trippie Redd.
After blowing up in 2017 off the back of his ‘A Love Letter To You’ projects, Ohio-bred Trippie Redd stamped himself as an integral cog in Hip-Hop’s forthcoming evolution, one that he’s since helped shape alongside the likes of Juice WRLD, Ski Mask The Slump God, XXXTentacion and co.
The new 14-track LP features appearances from Playboi Carti, Lil Baby, The Game, Lil Duke and Coi Leray.
‘!’ is an emo-meets-pop/rap fusion that lends Trippie’s trademark crooning tone to production that is far from groundbreaking, and despite coming in at a tidy run-time of 38 minutes, the full-length album at times feels never ending.
A dreary trance of lazy melodies and unimaginative songwriting has ‘!’ showing so little of the incredibly high potential that we all know Trippie Redd has, in what is a lacklustre record.
There are diamonds in the rough, with the Playboi Carti assisted ‘They Afraid Of You’ bringing a dynamic energy to the table, while ‘Lil Wayne’ leads the LP into a close with a fitting stream of consciousness.
Trippie Redd has a ceiling as high as anyone else who made the 2018 XXL cover, however, ‘!’ fails to realise that potential.
