Young Thug, Gunna, and members of their label, YSL was indicted on RICO charges in 2022. A new documentary called Rap Trap: Hip-Hop On Trial will highlight the trial and rappers’ freedom of speech.
In May 2022, Atlanta rap stars Young Thug, Gunna, and members of their YSL crew were indicted on RICO charges. A new documentary called Rap Trap: Hip-Hop On Trial is set to highlight their trial, which will premiere on Feb. 23 on Hulu.
A trailer for the documentary was released by ABC News Studios, including rappers such as Fat Joe and Killer Mike commenting on the trial and discussing rappers’ freedom of speech rights. Others in the documentary include Young Thug’s ex-girlfriend, Jerrick Karlae, and Kevin Liles, the 300 Entertainment CEO.
In the past, Liles gave testimony for Young Thug’s freedom and started a petition to prevent rap lyrics from being used in court. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis said she would still be willing to use Young Thug’s lyrics for the trial.
Other rappers that advocated to prevent rap lyrics from being used included Jay-Z and Philadelphia rap star Meek Mill.
For Young Thug and Gunna, a series of events unfolded while both were incarcerated or on trial.
Young Thug’s bail was denied three times, and he was also hit with street racing charges before the trial began. The “Surf” rapper was also accused of making a drug deal in court with another YSL defendant after he was handed a percocet.
Gunna was also accused of smuggling drugs while in jail, which caused his bail to be later denied. In December 2022, the “Pushin’ P” rapper was released from jail after taking a plea deal but was labeled a “snitch” by the rap community.
