If any other style of music has offered as much mental solace over the past annus horribilis as amapiano has, clue me in. Zulu for “pianos,” amapiano is a spacious yet cozy, mostly instrumental South African club sound that broke out of the townships of Gauteng province in 2019. Basically, it is molly for your ears—amapiano combines traditional rhythms, drifting keyboard chordage, percussive electrobass, witty dub-like atmospherics and a blissfully drifting lounge vibe. One of its rising stars, DJ-producer Teno Afrika, recently rereleased Amapiano Selections (Awesome Tapes From Africa) on vinyl, and it’s an especially groovy gateway to a large and rapidly expanding sonic system.
