Over the last few days Cardi B has been having a little viral moment. No, not for her upcoming album but for being in court.
On Monday, August 25, the rapper’s civil assault trial over alleged violence against Beverly Hills security guard Emani Ellis began. The case centers around a 2018 alleged altercation between Cardi B and Ellis at the “Bodak Yellow” rapper’s obstetrician office in which Cardi, who was pregnant at the time, is accused to have assaulted Ellis after she caught the security guard filming her. Ellis filed the lawsuit in 2020, claiming assault, battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress, and is seeking $25 million in damages.
Cardi B took the stand on Tuesday but despite the serious circumstances her testimony soon become primetime viewing as several of her soundbites went viral on social media, thanks in part to an awkward line of questioning from Ellis’ lawyer Ron Rosen.
Among other seemingly unrelated questions, Rosen asked Cardi about her wigs (seemingly confused as to why her hair was different that day from yesterday) and if she was affiliated with a gang. Online, viewers were puzzled by the asks but Cardi took them in stride. People online compared it to an SNL sketch but we’d argue that it’s even better: it’s real and Cardi completely off-the-cuff. Her responses, candid, succinct, and full of personality, prove once again why she’s a world famous celebrity and entertainer.
