Icelandic post-rock legends Sigur Rós have made a triumphant return with their first original track since multi-instrumentalist Kjartan “Kjarri” Sveinsson rejoined the band. The mesmerizing single, titled “Blóðberg,” is accompanied by a visually stunning video directed by acclaimed filmmaker Johan Renck.
For “Blóðberg,” Sigur Rós enlisted the talents of the London Contemporary Orchestra, conducted by the esteemed Robert Ames. The band also took on co-production duties, working alongside Paul Corley. The result is a breathtaking composition that seamlessly blends ethereal textures and expansive orchestration with Sigur Rós’ signature sonic landscapes.
Renck, the visionary behind the accompanying video, delved into the existential themes of the song, reflecting on the state of the world and his own somber contemplations. He expressed, “I feel as nihilistic as one could regarding the future. We are powerless against our own stupidities. Some aspects of this came to merge with my impressions of the themes of ‘Blóðberg.’ The music becoming a score to my own miserable thoughts, giving them beauty as only music can.”
Sveinsson’s departure from Sigur Rós in the early 2010s left fans yearning for his unique contributions, and his return to the fold was met with much anticipation. Now, his musical prowess is on full display as he reunites with his bandmates, adding another layer of depth and creativity to their already formidable sound.
The excitement continues to build as Sigur Rós prepares to embark on a tour featuring a remarkable 41-piece orchestra. The upcoming shows promise to be an immersive experience, with the band set to unveil new material. Speculation has been rife about the release of a new album, with whispers suggesting it may grace our ears as early as this month.
