Orlando Bloom says he can “understand” why Keira Knightley has some negative feelings about ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean”

Orlando Bloom has offered support to his former Pirates Of The Caribbean co-star Keira Knightley, who recently said she’d struggled with the negative reception her performances sometimes received in the movies.

Bloom told Entertainment Weekly that, while he had a positive experience himself, he finds it understandable that Knightley’s feelings might be more negative.

“It was such a huge moment in time that is almost like… it feels almost like another lifetime now,” he said. “But it certainly was unique and, you know, I’m always grateful. But I definitely understand where Keira was coming from, and she does wonderful things.… I have a lot of positive takeaways.”

Speaking to The Times in November, Knightley explained that the films simultaneously made her career and broke her spirit, saying: “I was seen as shit because of them, and yet because they did so well, I was given the opportunity to do the films that I ended up getting Oscar nominations for.

“They were the most successful films I’ll ever be a part of, and they were the reason that I was taken down publicly. So they’re a very confused place in my head.”

Six years previously, she told the Hollywood Reporter that the exposure led her to have a breakdown at the age of 22. She didn’t leave the house for three months, and required hypnotherapy to feel ready to walk the red carpet at the BAFTAs for the romantic war drama Atonement in 2008.

She also recently discussed her role in Love Actually, sharing that she doesn’t watch it at Christmas, instead preferring the 1988 action movie Die Hard. When asked in December if she watches Love Actually during the holiday season, she said: “No, I saw it on the premiere when I was 18, and I’ve never seen it since.”

Knightley’s currently starring in the Netflix spy drama Black Doves alongside Ben Whishaw and Sarah Lancashire. The show was well-received by fans and critics when it premiered in December, and a second season has already been teased.

Bloom, meanwhile, played the main character, a boxer, in The Cut last year. In September, he revealed how he lost nearly four stone in three months to prepare for the role.
