David Byrne and Fatboy Slim have announced that their new collaborative musical, Here Lies Love, will debut on Broadway later this year. The disco-pop adaptation tells the story of the former first lady of the Philippines, Imelda Marcos, and the People Power Revolution, which removed her husband, Ferdinand Marcos, from his position of power in 1986.
The production was directed by Alex Timbers and choreographed by Annie-B Parsons. Here Lies Love is being produced by Hal Laftig, Patrick Catullo, Diana DiMenna, Clint Ramos and Jose Antonio Vargas; it is expected to premiere on-stage in the summer of 2023.
In a statement, the producers offered: “As a team of binational American producers–Filipinos among us–we are thrilled to bring Here Lies Love to Broadway! We welcome everyone to experience this singularly exuberant piece of theatre. The history of the Philippines is inseparable from the history of the United States, and as both evolve, we cannot think of a more appropriate time to stage this show. See you on the dance floor!”
Here Lies Love comes as a result of the mid-2000s music and other multimedia work produced by Byrne and Slim at New York’s Carnegie Music Hall–and was released in album form in 2010. The initial theatre production launched in 2012, followed by showings in New York City in 2013, London in 2014 and most recently, Seattle in 2017.
