Dave Grohl has opened up about the “super duper heavy” song he wrote for Ozzy Osbourne, but ended up recording for Probot.
Foo Fighters are preparing to release their 12th studio album ‘Your Favorite Toy’ on April 24, an album Grohl has said will be stacked with “noisy, loud bangers” that feel like they come from “the old days”, but it is an even heavier song that the frontman has been reminiscing about.
In an interview with Kerrang Radio, he said he recalled a time when Ozzy’s wife Sharon was “calling out to different people” to write songs with the former Black Sabbath singer.
“And so I wrote this instrumental that was almost like a Melvins song, it was super duper heavy, and I thought, this could be so cool if Ozzy sang over it,” Grohl explained. “And they never picked it, they never used it.”
Instead, Grohl said he ended up recording the song himself for his metal side project Probot, who released a self-titled album in 2004. Every track on the album featured a different guest vocalist, and the song in question was ‘My Tortured Soul’, sung by Eric Wagner of Chicago doom metal band Trouble.
“He sang on that track, and it almost kind of has an Ozzy vibe to it,” Grohl added. “It never became an Ozzy song, but it’s a killer riff, man.”

Another Grohl song that Osbourne could have sung on but turned down was ‘Stacked Actors’, a track from Foo Fighters’ third album ‘There Is Nothing Left To Lose’ in 1999. He did, however, play with the late Foos drummer Taylor Hawkins on three tracks for his final studio album ‘Patient Number 9’ in 2022: ‘Parasite’, ‘Mr Darkness’ and ‘God Only Knows’.
Foo Fighters have released the lead single and title track of their new album, which NME has awarded four stars and said: “Foos have certainly turned up the heat, shifting to a more thrilling gear when they could cruise down the slow lane to keep things rolling across the stadium and festival circuit this summer.
“Despite having made headlines in recent years for drummer squabbles and infidelity, their comeback single is snarlingly unapologetic. This is not a cap-in-hand call for peace, love and understanding. It’s a middle finger statement of intent: “Nah nah nah!”
