PREMIERE: Collect Call – ‘Simple’

The electronic dream pop produced by Collect Call is sweet, thoughtful and quirky, so naturally new single ‘Simple’ encompasses all these things and is wistful and nostalgic and romantic as well, extra dimensions to mull over. This new material from Joe Thorpe‘s project brings to mind the solo output of former Wu Lyf-er Francis Lung, and that is no bad thing whatsoever.
‘I don’t wanna run right back…I just wish you were here,‘ Joe lays his emotions out in the song’s opening lines.

Taken from the The Golden Hour EP out later in the year, ‘Simple‘ is a cathartic, vulnerable outpouring by Joe Thorpe about his navigation of personal difficulties we all face. ‘Simple‘ reflects the yearning for the loss of childhood innocence, simpler times in our lives before the chaos of the adult world hits and leaves us feeling empty.

“Simple is about casting your mind back to the past. It’s about reconnecting with that childlike joy and innocence that we all have inside us, where we aren’t hampered by the pressures of adulthood or the demands of society. It’s about looking at old photographs and the nostalgia that brings. Let the dream-like-textures of synthesisers and piano wash over you and envelop you in the feelings of yesterday,’
says Joe. ‘The lyrics of this song sort of fell out of me unexpectedly and were recorded in a wardrobe during the first UK lockdown; It was a time when I felt especially isolated and was in a way a cry for help, which later turned into a feeling of acceptance as you’ll hear in the end result. Like a song heard through the mist that you can recall hearing before but not sure where.’

The Golden Hour EP is out on 14 Oct.
