Festival Report: Houseguest Fest 2026

A Thriving Scottish Scene

There is something undeniably stirring in the Scottish new music scene right now. Acts such as Brògeal, Humour, Vlure, Soapbox, Cowboy Hunters, Dictator, and Dallas Love Field have recently made significant waves internationally, with the former three having released acclaimed debut albums within the last year. Following closely in their footsteps is a new wave of talent—including Bikini Body, Doss, National Playboys, Puppy Teeth, and San Jose—all of whom have begun to make their mark south of the border with eyes set on mainland Europe.

This momentum is bolstered by the emergence of dedicated young promoters, specifically the Glasgow-based Scottish Music Collective and Crowded Flat. On April 4, 2026, they hosted the third edition of Houseguest Fest, a multi-venue event centered around Glasgow’s iconic Sauchiehall Street. Despite the looming threat of Storm Dave, the atmosphere remained electric, with venues like 1990, The Art School, and Nice N’ Sleazy’s providing the perfect backdrop for a day of discovery.

Expanding Horizons

The festival has clearly grown in ambition. While the inaugural edition focused primarily on homegrown Scottish talent, this year’s lineup featured an impressive array of artists from further afield, including Opus Kink, Hot Wax, Meryl Streek, and Croíthe. By utilizing four distinct performance spaces, including the upstairs bar at Nice N’ Sleazy’s, the organizers successfully created an immersive environment that felt like a true celebration of independent music.

Live Highlights and Raw Energy

The strength of Houseguest Fest lies in its curation, balancing established favorites with exciting new discoveries. The day kicked off at a packed Nice N’ Sleazy’s with Edinburgh’s Oedipus and the Mammas Boys, followed by a high-energy set from The Tuesday Club. As the day progressed, the basement venue 1990 hosted Bikini Body, whose infectious performance set a high bar early on.

A highlight of the afternoon was the performance by Humour at The Art School. Having recently completed a successful tour following their debut album, the band demonstrated a marked evolution in their live presence, commanding the festival’s largest stage with ease. Later, the post-punk outfit Heavyskint delivered a captivating performance, proving why they are one of the most exciting new acts to watch. The drama continued with Dublin’s Meryl Streek, whose intense delivery was perfectly suited to the intimate, low-ceilinged venue, before Dirty Faces brought the proceedings to a pulsating close.

A Lasting Impression

While the festival concluded with a highly anticipated set from local legends San Jose, the spirit of the day extended well into the early hours with an after-party at Nice N’ Sleazy’s. Houseguest Fest 2026 was a resounding success, highlighting the boundless enthusiasm for live music in Glasgow. With the bar set so high, anticipation for the 2027 edition is already building.
