Glasgow punk-rap duo Doss release their new single ‘King of the Castle‘ which takes aim at the self-obsessed state of social media. They also announce their debut EP Bootlicker which will be released in 2024.
‘King of the Castle’ mercilessly derides a lack of humility with a sledgehammer of disdain. It’s a an assault on the senses with its in your face rage against narcissistic behaviour. The scratchy rough and raw production combines perfectly with the caustic delivery. This is satirical disco-punk which is also self-deprecating and therein lies the joy. Tongue firmly in cheek ‘King of the Castle’ rips apart the “me me me” culture which dominates social media. The instrumentation is all thumping basslines and sizzling guitars mixing with a vocal which is manages to be taunting, challenging and yet humorous.
“This is me
This is my time
From my arse the sun does shine.”
Doss’s Sorley Mackay elaborates on the first release from ‘Bootlicker’:
“Lyrically, ‘King of the Castle’ is a satire on the ego. The whole tune bigs myself and Doss up as this over-important entity that commands your attention. The inspiration came from social media and observing the semi-narcissistic tendencies of bands, artists, and people constantly wanking themselves off. There’s a real lack of humbleness and not taking oneself too seriously. People want fame, admiration, and clout. I find it a bit lame to have to create a mad shrine of me in order to get it—like pretending you’re God’s gift to music or something. Just be yaself, and have a laugh.”
Since the snarling release of ‘The Mullets are Moving In’ at the start of this year, Doss have now begun incorporating live instruments into their set-up, with a live drummer joining them on-stage. An expansion that coincides perfectly with their headline shows across France, Glasgow, and London this December.
Known for his chaotic and galvanising live performances, Doss fired off the starting blocks with his debut single ‘Posers’ and was shortly after named in Vic Galloway’s list of Scottish artists to watch for 2022. As well as delivering standout live performances and festivals for the Crowded Flat series, Glasgow’s Doune The Rabbit Hole, Manchester’s Fairplay Festival, and headlining a stage at Kelburn Garden Party, support slots have already been achieved for notable acts such as DEADLETTER, Sinead O Brien, SpizzEnergi, and SNAYX.
