Beloved post-rock band Explosions in the Sky have announced their highly anticipated studio album, titled End, is scheduled for release on Sept. 15 via Temporary Residence Ltd. The project marks the band’s first studio album since their 2016 release, The Wilderness – and to celebrate the announcement they’ve shared the album’s captivating opener, “Ten Billion People.”
Despite the album’s title, a press release from the band assures that End does not signify the final work from Explosions in the Sky. The new LP follows their prior success with the soundtrack album for the PBS documentary Big Bend: The Wild Frontier of Texas, which showcased the sweeping sonic inclinations with the vast lands of Texas as inspiration.
“Our starting point was the concept of an ending—death, or the end of a friendship or relationship,” Explosions in the Sky said of the LP in a press release. “Every song comes from a story, or an idea one of us has had that we’ve all expanded on and made its own world. Maybe it’s our nature, but we kept feeling that the album title was ultimately open to a lot more interpretation—the end of a thing or a time can mean a stop, but it can also mean a beginning, and what happens after one thing ends might pale in comparison to what it becomes next.”
Following the album’s release, Explosions in the Sky are set to embark on a tour starting next month, which will extend throughout the fall season.
