Harlem native Sean Combs, popularly known as Diddy, is set to receive the Apollo Icon Award at the Apollo Theatre’s 2023 Spring Benefit on Monday, June 12th. The hip-hop mogul expressed his excitement and invited fellow Harlem natives to join him in celebrating this special occasion.
In an Instagram post on June 10, Diddy announced his homecoming and invited all Harlemites to come out and share in his joy. He stated that he would be receiving the Apollo Icon Award and extended an invitation to the people of Harlem, saying:
“So if you in the city, all the Harlemites, ya know I ain’t got everybody’s number but I plan on seeing ya and drinks is on Diddy.”
Diddy continued to express his pride and referred to himself as the champion and the king. He exclaimed:
“The champion’s coming back home. The king is coming back home. The son is coming back home. Harlem! Harlem! Harlem! I’m coming back home. Monday, yea. I could show ya better than I could tell ya.”
The Apollo Theatre’s 2023 Spring Benefit
Diddy won’t be the only honoree at the Apollo Theatre’s Spring Benefit. Basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will receive the Impact Award, and CEO of the Apollo, Jonelle Procope, will be honored for her outstanding service to the theater over 20 years.
The event will also feature guest musical performances by Wyclef Jean, a member of The Fugees, and renowned rapper MC Lyte.
In 2022, Diddy was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the BET Awards hosted by actress Taraji P. Henson.
