The Notorious B. I.G. known as “Biggie” or “Big Papa” to others, was shot and killed on March 9, 1997, in Los Angeles, sending shockwaves through the rap community. On the 26th anniversary of his death, he continues to be honored around hip-hop.
Bad Boy Records founder Diddy, who signed the “Hypnotize” rapper and helped his rap career recently posted a tribute video honoring the late rapper.
Other social media tributes were by New York rap legends DJ Clark Kent and Fat Joe.
Long Live Biggie Smalls
Biggie was one of the most popular rappers in the 1990s and was part of a resurgence in East Coast rap music. Some recent tributes to Biggie include the cover of a Deadpool comic book and Air Jordan releasing a limited edition of Biggie sneakers.
In addition, since Biggie’s death, rappers have publicly referenced Biggie as an influence in their careers such as Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Jadakiss, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, and others.
Biggie’s music is also still being sampled by artists such as Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, 50 Cent, The Game, and many others.
Last December, Biggie’s home borough of Brooklyn posthumously honored him with a statue located near the steps to the Brooklyn Bridge. It is a nine-foot sculpture of him wearing a crown.
According to News 12 in the Bronx, the latest honor of Biggie includes a mosaic in the neighborhood he grew up in, Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant or “Bed-Stuy.”
