Kobe Bryant’s Lakers jersey will be auctioned off and expected to sell for $7 million. The jersey was worn in over 25 games and is featured in a picture that Sotheby calls the “most iconic images.”
The auctioneer, Sotheby, plans to start the bidding for Kobe Bryant’s Lakers jersey at $5M with a starting window of up to $7M. The jersey was worn in the iconic image from game two from the Western Conference Quarterfinals in 2008.
The image shows Kobe screaming and pumping his chest after he scored and secured his team a significant lead in the game versus the Denver Nuggets. The jersey was worn more than 25 times and is even signed by Kobe himself.
Kobe’s Jersey 2nd Highest Price Since Michael Jordan?
If a bidder pays the predicted amount, it will be the second highest price ever paid for a basketball jersey. Michael Jordan’s jersey was the only one that fetched more money during the 1998 NBA finals, which sold for $10M.
The jersey comes just in time for the anniversary of Kobe’s death on Jan. 26, 2020, and he has since been honored by many celebrities and his family following the plane crash that ended his life. Sotheby is a famed auction house dating back to the 1700’s and has a dynamic marketplace for art and luxury.
They haven’t said where the money will go once the jersey is sold. They plan to hold the auction from Feb. 2-9.
