ALBUM REVIEW: Rich Brian – ‘The Sailor’

ALBUM REVIEW: Rich Brian – ‘The Sailor’

‘The Sailor’ is the sophomore album from 88Rising rapper Rich Brian.

After finding viral success in 2016 off the back of his debut single ‘Dat $tick’ – Rich Brian (fka Rich Chigga) flipped his name, and along with it, his musical direction and subsequent artistic integrity.

‘The Sailor’ is a charming, alternative Hip-Hop record that serves as yet another step forward for Brian, following his 2018 debut album ‘Amen’.

In what is easily his most mature effort to date, ‘The Sailor’ has the Jakarta-come-LA rapper growing out of his influences and into his sound, a sound that is as refreshing as any in todays Hip-Hop landscape.

While the first handful of tracks do see Brian hold the influences of artists such as Kendrick Lamar a little too close to his own creative output, quickly those cracks are covered with the often exuberant and encapsulating raps and ballads of Rich Brian.

‘100 Degrees’, ‘Kids’ and ‘Slow Down Turbo’ are the standout rap cuts on the LP, while the 88Rising spearhead shows that there’s a lot to like about his songwriting as whole on rap-ballads such as ‘Curious’ and ‘Drive Safe’.
